UBC school <strong>of</strong> social work equity and diversity strategic plan: A compilation <strong>of</strong> case studies 66<br />

disabilities. Some <strong>of</strong> their recruiting strategies include advertisements and through community<br />

networks. Additionally, the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Sydney has an Indigenous Employment Strategy,<br />

which seeks to attract staff, faculty, and students from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander<br />

backgrounds. There are additional programs <strong>of</strong>fered to person who identify as Aboriginal or<br />

Torres Strait Islander, such as cadetships, apprenticeships, and traineeships. These initiatives are<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered to faculty members in the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Education and <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>, as well as all programs<br />

at U <strong>of</strong> S.<br />

At the Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> at U <strong>of</strong> T, faculty recruitment and development are high<br />

priorities, and are included in their Diversity Initiative. Goals established to diversify the faculty<br />

include fostering relationships with other programs at the <strong>University</strong> to recruit potential<br />

candidates, such as Women’s <strong>Studies</strong> and Indigenous <strong>Studies</strong>, and developing and maintaining<br />

relationships with community members who are already working in <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>/social services<br />

who may be interested in teaching and researching at the Faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>. Other faculty<br />

development strategies have involved faculty members participating in workshops on anti-racism<br />

and diversity, as well as placing diversity high on the agenda at faculty retreats.<br />

Each <strong>of</strong> the universities highlighted in this section provides examples <strong>of</strong> policies and<br />

mechanisms for the UBC <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> to consider in their process <strong>of</strong> improving equity<br />

policies and practices.<br />

Student Outreach, Admission, and Support<br />

Another area <strong>of</strong> educational equity in the <strong>School</strong>s/Faculties <strong>of</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> examined<br />

in the case studies is student outreach, admission, and support. It is necessary to have policies<br />

and practices in place that promote equity, an environment free <strong>of</strong> discrimination and that values
