Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy (Education or <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>). The Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy (PhD) is<br />
well known as a research doctorate <strong>of</strong>fered by the faculty. It seeks to provide students with<br />
knowledge and skills to develop original research and new forms <strong>of</strong> practice. The program is<br />
designed for practitioners seeking to extend their pr<strong>of</strong>essional or academic qualifications (The<br />

Description <strong>of</strong> Educational <strong>Equity</strong> Initiatives<br />
Educational equity initiatives at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Sydney, Faculty <strong>of</strong> Education and<br />
<strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> focus on enrolment and admission processes and seek to attract a wider range <strong>of</strong><br />
diversity in the student body. Strategies used to address this area <strong>of</strong> educational equity have<br />
focused on the establishment <strong>of</strong> the accelerated entry option for the BSW program, which gives<br />
applicants with different educational and pr<strong>of</strong>essional backgrounds an opportunity to apply to the<br />
Faculty. Other areas <strong>of</strong> focus in equity issues for the Faculty include staff, faculty, and student<br />
recruitment, and scholarship opportunities.<br />

The Faculty <strong>of</strong> Education and <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong> has created and implemented strategies to<br />
meet the needs <strong>of</strong> applicants and students by attempting to decrease barriers to be accepted into,<br />
and complete the program. The Faculty focuses on the admission process by placing less<br />
emphasis on GPA. This has permitted broader opportunities for students from diverse<br />
backgrounds by considering individual qualities that potential students can bring to the program,<br />
which includes previous work experiences and future career aspirations. For example, the
