Group 8 Food, Beverages and Tobacco
In June 2007, the Group hosted a casual luncheon with Steve
Jebson, trading director, Trading Ambient Department of
PARKnSHOP, who introduced ways to retain and enhance market
competitiveness in today’s fast-changing retail industry. He further
explained PARKnSHOP’s successful retail strategies as well as Hong
Kong consumers behaviour.
In August 2007, Angel Young, executive director (Client Solutions)
of AC Nielsen Company, was invited to a casual luncheon to
present Hong Kong’s macroeconomic development and its impact
on households’ grocery spending. The event attracted more than
30 attendees.
The Group organised a three-day mission to Vietnam in November
2007. Led by chairman Eddy Lee and executive committee member
Anthony Lam, the tour visited a number of local food production
plants and the delegates met with representatives from the Ministry
of Planning & Investment of Foreign Investment Agency to learn
more about the latest investment information on Vietnam. A total of
17 members from the industry joined the delegation.
The executive committee members of the Group 8, Group 20 and
the general committee of FHKI attended a hairy crab dinner at
the Shun Tak Fraternal Association on October 2007. It was well
attended by over 40 members. Hairy Crabs were generously
sponsored by Eric Ng, executive committee member of Group 8
and 20.

In response to the increase in food safety incidents and food
nutrition value concerns of the community, two seminars were
organised in early September 2007 and March 2008 at the
Miramar Hotel & Langham Hotel respectively with around 70
to100 participants each. At the seminars, the speakers shared their
expertise on food safety control measures and highlighted the
latest international food safety standards.
Concerning the problem encountered by members in importing
grain powders from the Mainland following the introduction of
interim export control on agricultural and food products by the
Central Government in January, urgent meetings were organised
with affected companies to assess the impact of flour shortages
on Hong Kong’s food processing industry and discuss how the
FHKI might help resolve the issue. With the assistance from the
Liaison Office of the Central Government in Hong Kong SAR and
the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, the FHKI
successfully lobbied the Central Government to resume flour
export to Hong Kong and waive the export duty for grain powders
coming into Hong Kong for local consumption.
In March, the Executive Committee discussed the Food Safety Bill
proposed by the Food and Health Bureau and collated members’
views in a submission to the Government.
