Group 19 Hong Kong Toys Council
In May 2007, Council vice-chairman Bernie Ting attended the
meeting with the Guangdong Local Taxation Bureau in Guangzhou
which enhanced the industry’s understanding of the Mainland
taxation system.
In August 2007, Bernie Ting attended the meeting with
representatives of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in
Guangdong, HKSAR. The meeting provided a platform for industry
representatives to better understand the existing inspection
system of the Bureau and have direct dialogue with officials to
reflect concerns.
The FHKI, Hong Kong Toys Council (HKTC) and Toys
Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong (TMHK) joined hands to
stage the first ever Hong Kong International Toys Festival in January
2008. With funding from the Trade and Industry Department’s
SME Development Fund, the Festival aimed to promote Hong
Kong as the ‘World’s Toy Centre’ and as a producer of highquality
toys with excellence in quality control, risk management,
marketing, product designs and production planning. A series of
activities were launched in January 2008 to draw the attention of
international buyers and media to the commitment of Hong Kong
toy manufacturers in upholding the ‘Made by Hong Kong’ brand as
one they can trust.
The Festival started with a kick-off ceremony on 6 January 2008. A
business forum, aimed at overseas buyers and trade, was held on
8 January 2008 at the same venue, where Yvonne Choi, Permanent
Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of HKSAR
was the guest-of-honour. A seminar followed on 9 January 2008,
where John Tsang, Financial Secretary of HKSAR, gave a keynote
speech, while other speakers included Li Qingxiang, deputy
director of Guangdong Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine
Bureau, China, Richard O’Brien, director of International Programs
and Intergovernmental Affairs, US Consumer Product Safety
Commission and others, shared their views on the latest product
safety directives of the toys industry and good practices in
achieving product safety standards.
A press conference was arranged after the seminar with Council
chairman Lawrence Chan, Bernie Ting, and TMHK president
Samson Chan to meet with both local and international media.
On the last day of the Festival, a study tour to Dongguan for
overseas buyers to visit toy factories of Hong Kong companies
was organised on 11 January. Moreover, five additional seminars
on industry-related subjects were planned and a promotional
video would be produced and broadcast at major Hong Kong and
international toy events and trade fairs.
A full house of more than 400 guests from overseas and mainland
China attended the 2008 Annual Dinner organised by the Council
at the Island Shangri-La Hong Kong in January 2008. Distinguished
guests included Frederick Ma, Secretary of Commerce and
Economic Development, and Yvonne Choi. The dinner provided
an excellent opportunity for industry members to renew
acquaintances and make new friends.
