Chapters 7 <strong>and</strong> 8 review various <strong>applications</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>microearthquake</strong> <strong>networks</strong><br />

in earthquake prediction, hazard evaluation, exploration for geothermal<br />

energy, <strong>and</strong> studies <strong>of</strong> crustal <strong>and</strong> upper mantle structure. Chapter<br />

9 is a brief summary <strong>of</strong> our personal views on <strong>microearthquake</strong> studies <strong>and</strong><br />

a few comments on the future development <strong>of</strong> <strong>microearthquake</strong> <strong>networks</strong>.<br />

We have tried to keep mathematical notation consistent within each chapter,<br />

but it may vary from one chapter to another. This is due in part to<br />

differences in notation between the mathematical <strong>and</strong> seismological literature.
