29.3 percent of all institutional managers identified low P/E as an<br />

integral part of their style.<br />

generally consistent with ours regarding the efficacy of the DDM.<br />

Moreover, Michaud and Davis (1982) find that even during the<br />

period 1973-1980, when the DDM provided significant economic<br />

rewards, it was still not statistically significant.<br />

36. A skeptic might assert that our results may be affected by look-ahead<br />

‘bias. While DDM expected returns were collected in real time, P/E<br />

and other measures were determined retroactively. To avoid lookahead<br />

bias, we lagged announced earnings 3 months, consistent with<br />

Banz and Breen (1986). We also reran the regressions in Panel B<br />

utilizing a P/E attribute based on expected, rather than historical,<br />

earnings. These earnings estimates were also used as inputs to the<br />

DDM, so that any potential advantage was eliminated. The results<br />

were almost identical to those in Panel B. The DDM average<br />

coefficient was 0.11 with t-statistic O.+, and the low-P/E average<br />

coefficient was 0.88 with t-statistic 0.90.<br />

37. Note that industry attributions’are not shown in Panel D. For the<br />

time period studied, the returns to equity attributes are generally<br />

consistent with our earlier paper. However, the adoption of a<br />

quarterly, rather than a monthly, time frame does lead to some<br />

differences. First, the January effect is obscured. Second, transient<br />

measures such as residual reversal are less sigruficant. Third, the 3-<br />

month-ago earnings surprise measure is more significant. This arises<br />

from a data artifact relating to the uneven distribution of firms<br />

across fiscal reporting months.<br />

25 non-DDM measures. Arnott and Copeland (1985) report<br />

significant first-order autocorrelation of nalve returns to the<br />

DDM. We find first-order autocorrelation insignificantly negative<br />

for nalve returns and insignificantly positive for pure returns.<br />

Also, both series exhibit the first-quarter seasonality reported by<br />

Arnott and Copeland.<br />
