An Integrated Approach’<br />

The real ben#its oflong-short are released only by an integrated portjblio<br />

optimization.<br />

Most investors focus on the management of long portfolios and the<br />

selection of “winning“ securities. Yet the identification of winning securities<br />

ignores by definition a whole class of “losing” securities. The<br />

ability to sell short frees the investor to take advantage of the fullarray<br />

of securities and the full complement of investment insights by holding<br />

expected winners long and selling expected losers short.<br />

A long-short portfolio, by expanding the scope of the investor’s<br />

sphere of activity, can be expected to result in improved performance<br />

from active security selection vis-&-vis a long-only<br />

portfolio. But the benefits of longshort are, to a large extent, dependent<br />

on proper portfolio construction. Only an integrated optimization<br />

of long and short positions has the potential to maximize<br />

the value of investors’ insights. The benefits that emerge from int<br />

grated optimization encompass not only freedom from the shortselling<br />

constraint but also freedom from the restrictions imposed by<br />

individual securities’ benchmark weights.<br />

Of course, these benefits do not come without some cost. Much<br />

of the incremental cost associated with a given long-short portfoli<br />

reflects the strategy’s degree of leverage. Nevertheless, as we will<br />
