ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The production of the VetSEd manual was supported by a grant funded by the Veterans
Affairs (VA) Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) RRP 09-113 and Mental
Health QUERI Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Health Services Research and
Development (HSR&D). We greatly appreciate the vision and commitment of the Mental
Health QUERI to support Veterans‘ education.
Given that VetSEd is a relatively new initiative, we were fortunate to work closely with
the VA Central Office leadership and are grateful for their guidance and suggestions for
both national VHA and the local VA Medical Center (VAMC) service placement. We
are grateful as well to the National Center on Homelessness Among Veterans, Mr.
Vincent Kane (Director) and the Center for Health Quality Outcomes and Economic
Research (CHQOER), Dr. Dan Berlowitz (Director) at the Edith Nourse Rogers
Memorial (ENRM) Veterans Hospital, Bedford, MA, who shared in the vision of this
manual and provided crucial infra-structure and support. Additionally, this work could
not have been done without the direct and very generous participation of the Mental
Illness Research Education and Clinical Center, VISN 1, and the Bedford Mental Health
and Rehabilitation Service, Dr. Charles Drebing, Director.
We are also grateful for our collaborators at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Drs.
Patrick Corrigan and Jon Larson who are leaders in the field of psychiatric rehabilitation
among non-Veterans. There are many others we would also like to thank for making
important contributions to the conceptualization of this model of supported education
including the members of the Participatory Action Research Team and key informant
interviewees that participated in the needs assessment portion of this grant (RRP 09-113,
Ellison, Mueller, Smelson, Corrigan et al., 2011).
We are especially beholden to the groundbreaking work of Dr. Walter Penk who brought
both the vision and practices of psychiatric rehabilitation and supported employment to
the Veterans Health Administration and whose passion for Veteran educational and
vocational achievement continually inspires us.
