Steps for Worksheet #14: Campus Resources Assessment<br />

Begin by helping the <strong>Veteran</strong> collect information by reviewing the campus<br />

Web site, visit the campus information help desk, and/or do a search for the<br />

college‘s section of Student <strong>Veteran</strong>s of America. <strong>The</strong>se will serve as good<br />

starting points for gathering resource/service information.<br />

Have the <strong>Veteran</strong> start filling out all of the information in the right column on<br />

Worksheet #14: Campus Resources Assessment. You can list Web sites,<br />

location on campus, contacts, phones or e-mail addresses types of services<br />

available.<br />

<strong>The</strong> next part is to have the <strong>Veteran</strong> check the appropriate box under the<br />

―Assistance Needed?‖ section.<br />

For the boxes that are checked ―Yes‖ have the <strong>Veteran</strong> call or e-mail the<br />

specific resource/service to gather more detailed information about it.<br />

Review the map with the <strong>Veteran</strong> and discuss what source of help might be<br />

used and when.<br />

B. Time Management<br />

Time management will be an essential skill for any <strong>Veteran</strong> pursuing his/her educational<br />

goals. Below are some simple steps for using time effectively when in school so that you<br />

can coach the <strong>Veteran</strong> on using his/her schedules. As a peer <strong>VetSEd</strong> provider, you<br />

should review the steps below with the <strong>Veteran</strong>s on your caseload.<br />

Ask the <strong>Veteran</strong> to<br />

Schedule personal time each day. This is alone time for the <strong>Veteran</strong> to engage in<br />

either stress coping techniques or enjoyable activities.<br />

Delegate tasks that can be handled by others. Ask the <strong>Veteran</strong> to think about<br />

who in his/her social support network can pick up tasks in order to free up time<br />

for classes and studying (e.g., can family members do grocery shopping).<br />

Organize time around the class schedule. View the <strong>Veteran</strong>‘s class schedule and<br />

strategize how to sequence tasks and activities to maximize time (e.g., child care<br />

drop off can be sequenced with a morning commute to class).<br />

Learn to recognize mental and physical limitations and learn to say no to extra<br />

demands on the <strong>Veteran</strong>‘s time.<br />

Focus daily on using time in the most efficient manner for education (e.g., can<br />

the <strong>Veteran</strong> study while waiting at the laundromat?).<br />

Set daily educational priorities.<br />

Continually assess if there are educational or life activities that are wasting time<br />

and make adjustments to use time most efficiently.
