Confidentiality and <strong>VetSEd</strong>: Definition, Processes, Exceptions and Example<br />
Definition<br />
Confidentiality is a means of keeping <strong>Veteran</strong> information, feelings and experiences<br />
private.<br />
Confidentiality is promoted by:<br />
Processes<br />
Adhering to applicable laws, rules and guidelines about confidentiality<br />
Refraining from discussing <strong>Veteran</strong> private information in public places (i.e.,<br />
elevators, hallways, etc)<br />
Only sharing <strong>Veteran</strong> private information with VA providers who need to know<br />
as well as any non-VA person who the <strong>Veteran</strong> has allowed you to speak to by<br />
signing a release of information (ROI) form.<br />
Providing informed consent to <strong>Veteran</strong>s so they understand rights and limits to<br />
confidentiality.<br />

Example<br />
Sam, <strong>VetSEd</strong> peer provider, is working with Eric, an OND <strong>Veteran</strong> attending Acme<br />
Community College. Sam is approached by Dr. Smith, the Academic Dean of Acme<br />
Community College, who asks Sam if he can provide an update on Eric‘s progress to<br />
him and other staff in academic services. Sam lets Dr. Smith know that he is able to<br />
speak about supported education in general, but cannot share specifics about any<br />
<strong>Veteran</strong> he is working with, unless the <strong>Veteran</strong> signs a release of information form.<br />
