DESCRIPTION: Shrubs form a discontinuous to continuous canopy cover that may be fairly battered by flooding and<br />
scouring. Salix exigua is <strong>the</strong> major dominant, sometimes <strong>the</strong> only shrub species present. O<strong>the</strong>r vegetation<br />
characteristics <strong>of</strong> this type are not well-described.<br />
Stands occur on sandbars along major rivers and streams, which river scouring and deposition creates newly<br />
exposed sandy substrates.<br />
Flooding and ice scouring can create extensive damage to <strong>the</strong> structure <strong>of</strong> this type, and stands may be eliminated<br />
altoge<strong>the</strong>r for a period.<br />
COMMENTS: 3, MCS. This type is in need <strong>of</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r characterization to determine its rangewide character, and<br />
whe<strong>the</strong>r it is really needed in <strong>the</strong>se states as a type. It may be <strong>of</strong> limited extent in <strong>the</strong> states in which it is found.<br />
Taxonomically Salix exigua is equivalent to Salix interior. Salix lutea has been treated as a variety <strong>of</strong> Salix<br />
eriocephala by some authors (Great Plains Flora Association 1986).<br />

DISTRIBUTION: This sandbar willow type is found in <strong>the</strong> central and possibly nor<strong>the</strong>astern United States, and<br />
adjacent Canada, ranging from Indiana and Ontario to possibly Illinois, <strong>Ohio</strong>, and Pennsylvania.<br />
