If you could hardly imagine becoming integrated into the ‘strange’ culture during the cultural shock phase,
you now function reliably and self-confidently within the new society. You have possibly even become
used to some peculiarities and linguistic characteristics and miss them when you return to your former
homeland. Better ist you simply stay here.
to top
A few hints
Permitting the unusual to happen
In the beginning everything is new. Being conscious of the fact that you will gradually get used to your
new home will actually make you feel better already.
Be realistic
Do you want to ‘hit the ground running’ in your new job, learn German at the same time, get to know your
environment, have your new home completely furnished, start a cooking course and naturally get into
regular sports activities? Of course you do, but remain realistic and don’t over exert yourself. Remember
to rather set smaller and more attainable goals, being happy once these are reached, than large goals
which you can not attain and which will only frustrate you further.
Stay humorous
Even if everything seems terribly difficult at the moment and you feel like having a crying fit, laugh and
imagine how you will feel about this situation in a year from now on.
Permit errors
Nobody is perfect.
Make friends
Do not isolate yourself. You are here now and should make the best of it. Seize the initiative and
approach others. Would you like to start straight away? Then visit us in our Forum.
Bring a piece of your homeland with you
A person who carries a piece of memoranda with them from their homeland feels faster at home in a
foreign country. Particularly children need this from the outset. It is important for example that favourite
toys are brought along and are available from the first day on. Perhaps you should make a photo album
about your family, your friends, favourite places, favourite foods and hobbies while you are still in your
homeland. This helps you to tell others in Germany about your old home in lively and colourful detail.
An experience that will enrich your life
A culture shock also has something positive to it. It makes you aware that you consciously experience
your new country and master the differences that have set you apart. Naturally this is not always easy.
You will face complicated moments in which you will feel lonely and helpless. But anyone who is prepared
for such a situation can deal with it in a much calmer and better way. And for those who have managed to
integrate and find their way around in a strange country, it has added many new experiences and
enriched their lives. Think how proud you can be of yourself in having been in and dealt with such
situations.
