Automobile insurance and TÜV
The completion of a motor vehicle liability insurance is a legal requirement (obligation insurance law).
Without a liability insurance you do not have a vehicle permit and are therefore not allowed to participate
in traffic. This is the reason you also have to submit an insurance comfirmation card while registering your
vehicle - usually called a “Doppelkarte” (double card). The liability insurance covers the risk of persons,
property damages and financial damages, which can result from the use of a vehicle. This insurance
extends to all of Europe.
To ensure your continuous safety on roads, Germany has the “TUEV”, or the technical control board
which examines each car registered in Germany in regard to safety. Without passing this test you may
not drive in this country. The autocheck is repeated every two years. Please ask for the TUEV at a
garage.

Resident parking permit

Above all in bigger towns the parking is permitted only with a special approval in some
residential areas: the resident parking permit. Though the identity card guarantees no
parking bay for you, however, the inhabitants of the respective part of town are
preferred with it towards other drivers. The vehicles which do not have such an identity
card may not park in the excellent zones. In some towns and communities you can
apply for the resident parking permit even online on the Internet.
