Preschool<br />

Preschools are establishments for children of preschool age with a special educational need and are<br />

distinctive according to the child’s handicap - physical, mental or psychological.<br />

Special schools for the pysically and mentally handicapped<br />

These schools are for children and young people, who cannot be generally educated in the elementary or<br />

grade schools due to physical, mental or psychological characteristics. Attendance is compulsary.<br />

Primary school<br />

From age six to ten children attend four years of comprehensive primary school to achieve a common<br />

basic level of public education. This is compulsary.<br />

Integrated comprehensive schools<br />

Comprehensive schools have the goal of educating pupils individually according to their achievements<br />

and inclinations. They combine all three school types.<br />

After school homework supervision<br />

Establishments that cater for the supervised preparation of school homework.<br />

General education secondary schools<br />

General education secondary schools: five comprehensive school years of general education which<br />

continue on from the primary school and conclude with a main graduation at the end of class nine after<br />

successful participation in the final examination.<br />

General education secondary schools with integrated technical components<br />

This special form of general education secondary school enables talented pupils to attain a certificate of<br />

secondary education beyond the attendance of the year 10 class.<br />

Secondary School or Junior High (also known as Middle School)<br />

The six year comprehensive secondary or junior high school is a continuation of the elementary school<br />

and finishes with the tenth grade, concluding with the successful participation of the final examination.<br />

High School<br />

The eight to nine comprehensive High School years are a continuation of the elementary school and<br />

conclude with year 12 or 13 after the successful participation in the final examination which results in the<br />

“Abitur”: a leaving certificate from a German secondary school qualifying for university admission or<br />

matriculation.<br />
