Healthcare insurance
Usually all employees in Germany, those in training as well as all students,
require healthcare insurance. The legal healthcare insurance offers
protection with illness and maternity as well as precaution measures to the
early diagnosis and prevention of illnesses.
The amount of the contribution depends on the monthly income. The
contributions are paid for in equal parts by the employer and the employee.
Employees, who are voluntarily insured, are entitled to a contribution
subsidy from the employer. Students pay the student contribution. You can
freely choose the healthcare insurance cover and also the company you
would like to be insured with. Since the 1st of January, 2009 the health
ground is valid for insured persons of the legal health insurance scheme
(gesetzliche Krankenversicherung - GKV) in Germany, i.e. every cash
raises a uniform amount for the legal health insurance.
Primary benefits of the legal health insurance companies include early
detection and diagnosis, treatment by general physicians, specialists and dentists as well as a hospital
stay. They also include the reimbursement (partly) of the costs of prescribed medication, ointments and
tonics, as well as benefits during pregnancy and after giving birth. The insurance card must be submitted
with each visit to the physician. You are also billed via this card, which is issued to you by the healthcare
insurance company. In addition you must also pay a fee of 10 € for each first visit to the doctor in the
yearly quarter.
Those who feel that the basic services of the legal healthcare insurance are not sufficient, can set up a
private, additional and/or supplementary insurance.
It is also recommended to have a private “Reisekrankenversicherung” (travel health insurance) while
traveling abroad.
