Nursing care insurance
The legal nursing care insurance is responsible for costs of patients in need of care. Individuals in need of
care are those, who no longer able to independently master regular tasks involved in daily life because of
a physical, psychological or mental handicap.
The amount of the allowance for nursing care depends in part on the degree of care needed, as well
as the kind of care, this means whether the care is administered by a member of the family or friends, a
professional hospital service or a nursing home. Insured persons are only entitled to benefits of the
nursing allowance from the care insurance, if they were insured previously for at least five years.
A valid principle in Germany states: “nursing care insurance follows health insurance”. Those registered
with a legal health insurance company also receive nursing care insurance. Those choosing to be
privately insured against illness must complete a private nursing care insurance. The financing of nursing
care insurance also orients itself on the legal health insurance. Employees and employers each pay half
of the contribution. The only difference to the legal health insurance is a legally established contribution
rate. This is automatically retained from the monthly income together with the remaining social security
contributions.
