Unemployment insurance
The unemployment insurance functions primarily to ease the financial consequences of unemployment.
The liability to insure is valid for all employees and those in training whose work time totals more than 15
hours per week or for those whose earnings total over 400 Euros per month. There are only a few
individuals or groups, for example government officials, soldiers or persons older than 65 years of age,
who are exempt from the obligation to insure.
The contributions for the unemployment insurance are carried in equal parts by employees and
employers. The rate of contribution is presently 6.5 per cent of the monthly income.
Regarding the unemployment insurance the Federal Agency for Employment offers a multiplicity of
benefits and services. These include both measures to integrate persons into the work force or training
positions through vocational guidance, employment agencies or the promotion of a vocational
qualification and the additional payment in form of cash to ensure living costs are covered in case of
unemployment.
