Outstanding shopping possibilities It is always thrilling and exciting to go shopping in a strange country with a foreign language. To enable you to find your way around more easily in the jungle of purchase possibilities, we will show you the different probabilities, how to compare, and to help you find whatever you need. For the things you need on a daily basis it is best to go to a supermarket in your neighborhood or to a discount store such as Aldi or Lidl. Larger shopping centers are usually located somewhat outside of cities or in industrial areas. In addition you will be able to find clothes, electrical hardware, in-house wares and children’s toys there. Examples of such larger shopping centres are “Real” and “Marktkauf”. Frequently there are a few smaller shops associated with them. In the city centers there is a main shopping street (e.g. Mannheimer Planken, Heidelberger Hauptstraße und Bismarckstraße in Ludwigshafen) on which you can locate a number of department stores, electrical hardware stores, banks, perfumeries, restaurants and various smaller shops. Here you can find nearly everything and can stroll around at your leisure. An alternative to the city centres are the shopping centres e.g. Rhine-<strong>Neckar</strong>-Zentrum at Viernheim, in which you can also go shopping in rainy weather. In Germany there are a lot of baker shops (speciality shops for all breads, pastries and cakes) and butcher shops (speciality shops for all types of meat). Here you can buy very fresh goods, usually from own produce and slaughtering. The Factory Outlet Centres in which reduced brand-name articles are sold represent a further possibility for shopping. They are situated somewhat outside the cities and are rather rare in Germany. If shopping without leaving the house is preferred, then there are three ways to do so: order by catalogue -, internet, or TV shopping. The desired articles which have been ordered by telephone, internet or post will be sent some days later per parcel service.
