Cities and villages in the region
The settlement structure of the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region is the
result of an eventful history of principalities and kingdoms, partly manifested
in time by the names of today's Federal states. Crucial epochs are
therefore seen mirrored in current townscapes. Many cities and villages are
for example medieval establishments of religious origin.
Today well restored town centres and nearby castles and forts host
numerous Middle Age markets, Festivals, Openair-Events and a lot of
wine festivals during the summer months. The large cities of the region
bloomed during different epochs: Heidelberg in the Romantic era,
Mannheim in the Baroque and Ludwigshafen in the Industrial age, hence
the cities display a unique character, providing variety.
The well-developed infrastructure links the cities and surrounding villages:
travel time to and from the country to the city is short. The train from
Mannheim to Heidelberg takes only a quarter of an hour and only a little
longer to the surrounding local recreational areas.
