Regulated opening times
In the metropolitan region the shops and trading businesses are generally open from Monday through to
Saturday. On Sundays and during the holidays the shops are usually closed. Only in exceptional cases
are they open on Sundays (so called "Verkaufsoffener Sonntag"). The opening times vary greatly, as it is
the responsibility of the Federal states to specify store opening times.
Large supermarket chains in Germany are open from 7 or 8 am to around 8 or 10 pm. Smaller
supermarkets have very different opening times, but are open to at least 6 pm in the evenings.
Most shops in the city centres are open from 09.30 am to 8 pm and electrical hardware stores have
open from 10 am to 8 or 10 pm. Hardware stores, however, are usually open from 7 am in the morning to
8 pm in the evening.
In smaller towns shops partially close during the week over noon from 1 pm to 3 pm and Saturdays after
12 noon time. On Wednesday midday some stores are usually closed there.
