Organization Profile
The Society in Tajikistan for Assistance and Research (STAR) is the Tajikistan project of a humanitarian non-government organisation
officially registered as a charity in the United Kingdom. STAR is a developmental organization set up to alleviate suffering and improve the
lives of the citizens of Tajikistan through charitable, developmental, economic and educational activities.
The main spheres of activity are currently education, training and publishing language materials.
Past and Current Programmes
• English Language School
The school has the reputation among both locals and expats as the best place for learning English in Tajikistan by providing “services of
Western quality at Central Asian prices”.
Teaching staff have also partnered with other groups seeking to provide local English teachers and local teacher trainers with professional
development opportunities-for instance, with Open Society Institute (OSI) and the local English Teachers Association of Tajikistan (ETAT).
• Local Education Project
STAR has also started a program in conjunction with the Turson-Zoda Ministry of Education of training local teachers in teaching English &
computers.
• STAR Publications
In addition to the two existing publications, "The Official Beginners’ Guide to Tajiki", "An Intermediate Self-Study Guide to Tajiki". the
"Standard Tajik-English Dictionary", and the Tajiki Language Resources CD-ROM, STAR has recently published a searchable database
English-Tajik/Tajik-English dictionary and is continuing to develop further Tajiki language and other educational resources to include in the
future.
• Information Technology Training Center
Established in October 2003, the Information Technology Training Center has taught classes of Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel &
PowerPoint. These courses have also been made available in both Tajik & Russian languages. Consultancy-based training has also been
provided to NGOs customized to their needs. Additional computer training has been given in our Turson-Zoda.
• Reduce the negative impacts of migration on the families and communities in the Khatlon region through:
1. Economic improvement through increased business development, training in personal financial management, and skills training for youth
through apprenticeship clubs
2. HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention training, followed by development of a community plan to address the AIDS issue
3. Strengthening family and community relationships focusing on communication and conflict resolution skills.
Future Programming Direction
The English Language School will continue to operate as at present.
- Work will continue on developing more Tajik Language Learning and other educational resources.
- The Local Education Centre will be opened, providing an English Language Library and Computer Centre in Tursonzoda.
- The Poverty Relief project in Khatlon Oblast will continue with its focus on vocational training, job creation and health education.
