AIDS Foundation East-West (AFEW) is a non-governmental humanitarian public health organization whose mission is to make a major
contribution to the reduction of the impact of HIV/AIDS in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) by:
• Taking an innovative and pro-active approach to developing, implementing and promoting tools for effective HIV/AIDS prevention,
treatment, care and support, designed for and appropriate to the specific conditions of EECA;
• Targeting the younger generation of the region, in particular those engaging in risky behaviour;
• Co-operating closely with national governmental and non-governmental structures to boost local coping capacities and to advocate for
appropriate action;
• Strengthening East-West engagement by exchanging knowledge and people via programme activities and stimulating a committed response.
Past and Current Programmes
1. Drug Demand Reduction Program and Health promotion in Tajikistan Ministry of Justice Penal System (completed);
2. "Client management" Project in Sughd province of Tajikistan (completed);
3. "Pamir against AIDS" in Gorno-Badakhshanskaya Autonomous province (ongoing);
4. "ACCESS" Project - HIV/AIDS and TB/HIV Collaborative Efforts in Central Asia (ongoing);
5. "AMAL" Project - Health and Psycho-social Support Project in the Soghd Region in Tajikistan (ongoing).
Future Programming Direction
1. "ACCESS" Project:
- increased continuity in HIV/AIDS/TB prevention and care for at-risk youth, SWs, IDUs, prison inmates, and PLWH is in place in project
sites;
- patients with HIV and/or TB have access to adequate medical care related to HIV/TB co-infection available to them.
2. "AMAL" Project:
- to increase access to and the use of health and psycho-social services for vulnerable groups;
- to decrease level of stigma and discrimination towards people living with HIV (PLWH).
