IV. CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS
VEGA project No. 1/2334/05 Comparative study of gamma-aminobutyric acid metabolism as
an approach for the understanding of its function in eucaryotic cells. (Tibor Liptaj)
The main goals of the project are: a/ comparative study of the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) metabolism in
selectedyeasts and filamentous fungi, b/ elucidation the function of GABA in fungi in the context of current
hypotheses, c/ investigation of the role of GABA as a bridge of carbon and nitrogen metabolism and the role in
differentiation of filamentous fungi and selected animal cells.
Project duration: from 2005 to 2007
VEGA projet No.2/5010/5 Study of neuroprotective effects of new pyrolidine derivatives. (Tibor
Liptaj|
The main goals of the project are: a/ optimalization of the synthesis of new pyrolidene derivatives, b/
development of the protocol for short-term ischemia of experimental animals, c/ implementation of monitoring of
the ischjemia induced morphological changes in the brain of experimental animals using NMR methods, d/
mapping of the metabolite in brain tissue of experimetal animals using NMT methods
Project duration: from 2005 to 2007
APVV project No. 51-017905 Molecular mechanisms of the new drugs affecting oxidative
stress – the important factor of the number of illnesses
In previous VEGA projects (2/2054/22, 2/5010/5) the series of original antioxidants derived from pyridoindol
stobadine was prepared. In preliminary studies it was, in accord with the theoretical assumptions found, that some
of the newly prepared compounds have, in comparison with the original one, higher anti-oxidative power, lower
acute toxicity and do not exhibit undesirable effects. It was found, that these compounds exhibit protect the
nervous tissue against the damage caused by hypoxia or re-oxidation. It can be expected, that development of
