Peter Musty is an expert <strong>in</strong> the plann<strong>in</strong>g, design and visualization of downtown,<br />
suburban <strong>in</strong>fill and new urban projects.<br />
Based <strong>in</strong> M<strong>in</strong>neapolis, he has extensive public sector consult<strong>in</strong>g experience<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g on design and plann<strong>in</strong>g project teams with and for municipalities. Peter<br />
has led several design and project teams; recent project leadership <strong>in</strong>cludes the<br />
Lor<strong>in</strong>g Park Neighborhood Master Plan (M<strong>in</strong>neapolis), 2010-2011. Other current municipal work is <strong>in</strong> St<br />
Paul (Ford Site), Nisswa MN and Hast<strong>in</strong>gs MN. Private sector experience <strong>in</strong>cludes work for developers on<br />
master plans and project design for build<strong>in</strong>g, block and neighborhood scale projects. Peter’s plan for Mixson,<br />
an <strong>in</strong>fill neighborhood under construction <strong>in</strong> North Charleston, SC, was awarded a 2008 Charter Award for<br />
Neighborhood Design from the Congress for the New Urbanism.<br />
Other past experience <strong>in</strong>cludes urban <strong>in</strong>fill & build<strong>in</strong>g project designs, historic reuse studies, LEED for<br />
Neighborhood Development, plann<strong>in</strong>g/ urban design charrette teams, and work on form based district design<br />
& development guidel<strong>in</strong>es. Peter has a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Notre Dame<br />
School of Architecture and was a 2001 <strong>Knight</strong> Fellow at the University of Miami School of Architecture.<br />

Mary Newsom<br />

Ms. Newsom is a lifelong newspaper journalist who, as an editorial board<br />
member and columnist at The Charlotte Observer, concentrated her writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />
on Charlotte regional urban and suburban growth, plann<strong>in</strong>g, urban design,<br />
transportation and land preservation. She jo<strong>in</strong>ed the UNC Charlotte Urban<br />
Institute <strong>in</strong> June 2011, where she works on strategic community and university<br />
partnerships and oversees the <strong>in</strong>stitute’s onl<strong>in</strong>e communications. She had a year-long Nieman Fellowship at<br />
Harvard University and was a <strong>Knight</strong> Fellow <strong>in</strong> Community Build<strong>in</strong>g at the University of Miami. Ms. Newsom<br />
has considerable expertise <strong>in</strong> the areas of urban and suburban issues, Charlotte region and North Carol<strong>in</strong>a<br />
politics and government, writ<strong>in</strong>g, edit<strong>in</strong>g and journalism.<br />
