This indicator shows the ratio of students to teaching staff and is obtained<br />

by dividing the number of full-time equivalent students at a given level of<br />

education by the number of full-time equivalent “teachers” at that same level<br />

and in the same type of institution. The classification of educational personnel<br />

used is intended to serve as a framework for classifying school personnel for all<br />

levels of education. The classification is based on functions and organises staff<br />

into four main functional categories. The classification is: i) Instructional<br />

Personnel; ii) Professional Support for Students; iii) Management/Quality<br />

Control/Administration; iv) Maintenance and Operations Personnel. Instructional<br />

Personnel is sub-classified in teaching staff, i.e. classroom teacher, and<br />

teacher aides.<br />

Teaching staff at includes professional personnel involved in direct<br />

student instruction. The classification includes: classroom teachers; special<br />

education teachers; and other teachers who work with students as a whole class<br />

in a classroom, in small groups in a resource room, or one-on-one inside or<br />

outside a regular classroom. It includes chairpersons of departments whose<br />

duties include some amount of student instruction. It does not include nonprofessional<br />

personnel who support teachers in providing instruction to<br />

students, like teachers’ aides and other paraprofessional personnel.<br />

Staff reported as “teachers” in early childhood education are generally<br />

similar to those reported in primary education.<br />
