Sexual health holds a massive influence over mental<br />

health <strong>and</strong> psychological wellbeing. Even though<br />

it is not so openly discussed in mainstream media<br />

or even between friends, genital surgery can help alleviate<br />

pain <strong>and</strong> improve quality of life for many women.<br />

Questions surrounding the appearance <strong>and</strong> function of<br />

the vagina <strong>and</strong> urinary system can plague women of all ages,<br />

yet talking openly about these concerns can be challenging<br />

for some women. A blanket of taboo means there is a lack<br />

of open <strong>and</strong> honest public dialogue that makes it difficult for<br />

some women to seek successful treatment – or even know<br />

there are treatment options available.<br />

Adelaide pelvic reconstructive surgeon Dr Oseka Onuma<br />

believes vaginal rejuvenation has been misrepresented in<br />

mainstream media <strong>and</strong>, because of this, women receive<br />

little support in making a decision that is necessary to ease<br />

discomfort or improve self-confidence.<br />

‘The number of women patronised by mainstream media<br />

<strong>and</strong> even by some members of the medical community<br />

when seeking help is disappointing,’ Dr Onuma explains.<br />

‘The majority of my patients seeking vaginal rejuvenation<br />

are not motivated by the aesthetic, but a growing dislike of<br />
