Dermal fillers
When undergoing treatment with dermal fillers, female patients are often after an
accentuated result. This is not the same for male patients.
‘In filling the cheeks, you don’t have the same leeway with male patients as
you do with female patients,’ Dr Flynn explains. ‘If you fill a women’s cheeks a
little too much, you can often get away with an aesthetically accentuated result.
If you do this with males, the result is usually not as attractive. It’s a delicate
balance.’
‘The same goes for filling the lips. Naturally, men have thinner lips than women,
so if you fill them too much they will look decidedly overdone,’ he adds.
For men, cosmetic
surgery should avoid
“accentuating” and
“redefining”. Instead,
it should fill the agerelated
hollows and
return the face to its
base line
Cosmetic surgeries
A popular procedure in male patients is eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) and
brow lifting. When combined, these procedures can open the eyes, tighten the
surrounding skin and reduce the appearance of heavy, wrinkled brows. This
creates a noticeable anti-ageing result – but the surgical approach needs to be
tailored differently to male and female patients.
‘The female brow is fine, with typically more arch and height, and a brow lift
can refine this look,’ says Dr Flynn. ‘The male brow is naturally thicker and flatter.
If it is raised and arched, the result can look very odd and obvious.’
The same principle applies to the face. Women have finer, more delicate
features, while men have a flatter, squarer structure. These aesthetic differences
need to be incorporated into the surgical approach.
‘Cosmetic surgery for women usually aims to accentuate the curves and
shapes of the face, for example, to fill out the cheek volume, emphasise the
cheek bones and plump the lips,’ Dr Flynn explains. ‘For men, cosmetic surgery
should avoid “accentuating” and “redefining” – instead, it should fill the agerelated
hollows and return the face to its base line. You’re not looking for a
“sculpted” result.’
Similarly, a neck lift is a surgical procedure that can help improve the
appearance of sagging skin on the neck. The surgery is essentially the lower
section of a facelift and is useful in someone who has an ageing neck out of
proportion to the rest of the face.
‘The surgery will improve the appearance of loose, sagging skin but will not
help the fine crepe-paper appearance of someone with very thin skin,’ Dr Flynn
explains. ‘This is of particular benefit to males, as their skin is naturally thick and
they don’t suffer so much from crepey skin, as seen in female patients.’
Alongside a neck lift, excess fat on the neck can also be removed with the help
of liposuction. This can improve the neck contour and give a sharper, younger,
more defined appearance.
Males commonly have different motivations, concerns and expectations
going into cosmetic surgery. They age differently to women, typically have more
sun damage, and have different expectations of the final result. It takes an expert
eye to tailor cosmetic treatments to each individual patient, incorporating the
different anatomy and aesthetic concerns of male and female patients. csbm
