There is an abundance of evidence that Resveratrol – a compound found in red wine and grapes – is linked to an array of health benefi ts, such as reduced risk of age-related diseases. Now, scientists from The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, add a new benefi t to the growing list of “reasons to indulge”. The research team, including lead author Mathew Sajish and senior investigator Paul Schimmel, investigated resveratrol’s association with tRNA synthetases, which are enzymes that aid in the translation of genetic material during the production of proteins. Once in the nucleus, the researchers found that the TyrRS-resveratrol combination switched on a gene called PARP-1, known to play a role in stress response and DNA repair and to have a major infl uence on ageing. What is more, activating PARP-1 also switched on a number of other protective genes, including FOXO3A and SIRT6 – associated with longevity – and the tumor-suppressor gene p53. Two glasses of red wine have been shown to trigger the stress response that promotes numerous health benefi ts. Women with breast implants urged not to be alarmed by inaccurate reports on cancer link In response to a recent study linking infection caused by breast implants to a rare cancer, the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons has released a statement advising women to consult with their doctor if they’re concerned. ‘However, we urge women not to be unduly alarmed as this is an exceptionally rare cancer affecting only 170 women worldwide to date. To put it in perspective, we are talking about a potential risk to approximately one in one million women with breast implants,’ says President of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, Dr Tony Kane. Associate Professor Anand Deva, author of the study published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, has recommended a 14- point safety plan around breast implants, saying all surgeons need to be conscious of the risk of infection when the implants go into the breast. ‘While it is important that women aren’t alarmed by this study, it is essential that patients are followed up annually for a clinical examination and they are educated about how to identify any abnormalities such as a lump around the implant,’ explains Associate Professor Deva. 22 www.cosbeauty.com.au
