Sydney plastic
surgeon Dr Howard
De Torres has more
than 30 years of
experience creating
beautiful looking
results. Caitlin
Bishop reports.
With more than 30 years of clinical experience specialising in cosmetic,
plastic and reconstructive surgeries, Sydney plastic surgeon Dr Howard
De Torres brings expertise and an eye for aesthetic detail to his breast
surgery patients.
People decide to undergo breast surgery for a number of reasons – to increase or
reduce bust size, lift sagging breasts and correct asymmetry. There are a number of
options in deciding upon the procedure and type of result – for example, the size and
shape of implant, as well as its texture and positioning, will affect the final outcome.
In making these choices, it helps to know your anatomy and the way ageing
affects breast tissue. During pregnancy, breasts will swell and prepare to produce
milk. The suspensory ligaments and the skin are stretched, and the fat may be
dissolved. After pregnancy, the breasts can shrink and lose shape.
There are also a number of changes that occur due to the natural ageing process.
Gravity is usually the first to take its toll, causing the breasts to droop. The breasts
might also lose some volume, causing the surrounding skin to sag.
Depending on the changes that have occurred in your breast tissue, a different
approach to surgery might be determined. For example, when augmenting the
breast, the amount of existing soft tissue on the chest wall will determine if the
implant is positioned above or below the pectoralis muscle.
Breast Augmentation
In addition to a “straightforward” enlargement, breast augmentation can help create more youthful contours in an aged
breast and restore volume after breast feeding.
Dr De Torres tailors the surgery to each individual patient, depending on their existing anatomy and desired result.
Almost all women’s breasts are asymmetrical to a degree, and making breasts the same size during surgery and ensuring
both nipples are the same height requires experience and skill.
‘Breast augmentation is a relatively extensive procedure, and the surgical approach should always be customised to
each patient’s body type and expectations,’ Dr De Torres explains. ‘There is no one size fits all; every woman is different
and deserves personalised attention, care and surgical plan.’
