Sydney ENT and facial cosmetic
surgeon Dr William Mooney says
rhinoplasty and chin augmentation can
give a more masculine appearance.

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to
improve the aesthetics and functionality of the nose
and nasal passage. And it’s consistently in high
demand in Australia.
‘Australia’s experience of rhinoplasty is different from the
rest of the world,’ says Sydney ENT and facial cosmetic
surgeon Dr William Mooney. ‘I have a busy rhinoplasty
practice – about one in three of my rhinoplasty patients are
male. This compares to around one in 15 in the US and one
in 20 in Europe.’
‘The popularity of high impact sports, without crash
helmets, as well as dubious conflict resolutions, particularly
in males, has led to a prominent need for nose surgery,’ Dr
Mooney adds. ‘A lot of Australian males will have a bump
on their nose before early adulthood, which can influence
both aesthetics and functionality.’
Functionality
Nose surgery is a unique cosmetic surgery procedure –
combining both functional and cosmetic components.
In fact, most men are pleased with the functional results
of rhinoplasty, even if that’s not the reason they initially
sought out treatment. For those with functional concerns,
Dr Mooney explains these problems can greatly influence
quality of life and overall health.
‘Functional problems can affect simple things like
sleeping and exercise,’ he says. ‘In any sports that stop
and start rapidly – for example soccer, football and surfing
– 30 per cent of oxygen intake is derived through the nose.
When nasal functionality is improved through rhinoplasty,
this can result in a significant improvement in performance.’
‘Nasal obstruction can also be associated with snoring,
which can be erosive for relationships; can have safety
implications, causing an inability to smell leaking gas or fire;
and can affect the finer things in life, rendering the nuance
scents in food, coffee or wine unnoticeable,’ Dr Mooney
adds. ‘Rhinoplasty can significantly improve these areas,
and result in an improved quality of life overall.’
Dr Mooney spends a long time planning the surgery
with his patients to help secure the most effective functional
and aesthetic results. His practice, Face Plus MediSpa in
Bondi Junction, uses state of the art equipment to help
plan for the best result after surgery.
‘I spend a lot of time analysing the different functional
issues with males,’ Dr Mooney says. ‘We use a fibre optic
camera so the patient can literally see what’s going on
inside the nose. We also perform a peak flow test, to show
how bad their breathing really is.’
Aesthetics
In most cases, male rhinoplasty patients are seeking a
straight, strong, masculine-looking result. Dr Mooney
always tailors his approach to each individual patient,
taking into account their ethnicity, existing anatomy and
overall facial shape.
‘Men can be very discerning in their assessment of facial
aesthetics; they’re quick to pick up something that looks
fake!’ Dr Mooney says. ‘Female rhinoplasty patients are
often after a pretty, almost “done” result, but this is certainly
not the case for their male counterparts.’
Dr Mooney uses digital imaging during the consultation
process to ensure he has a realistic understanding of the
