Breast Lift
‘In terms of surgery, a breast lift, or
mastopexy, is quite similar to breast
reduction,’ explains Dr De Torres. ‘It
takes around the same amount of
time to perform and the resulting scar,
depending on the technique, is in the
same location under the breast.’
Women who consider undergoing
a breast lift have often experienced
severe weight loss and wish to rectify
droopy breasts, which commonly
occur after pregnancy. ‘A breast lift
involves removing excess skin and
moving the nipple higher up on the
breast mound,’ explains Dr De Torres.
‘There are generally three types of
incisions: a doughnut-shape, which
cuts around the areola; a lollipop
shape, which cuts around the areola
and vertically down the breast crease;
and the anchor shape, which is cut
vertically down and then horizontally
across the breast crease.’
Post surgery, patients have found
wearing swimwear more comfortable
and enjoy the option of not wearing
a bra under clothing. ‘The result is
a more youthful-looking shape that
gives the illusion of added volume,
and a pert, more supported breast
frame,’ he concludes.
Women with excessively large breasts often experience pain and posture
difficulties, and can find participating in highly active sports uncomfortable.
‘Breasts of overly large proportions can be extremely debilitating for women
– both physically and psychologically,’ says Dr De Torres.
‘Breast reduction surgery can not only restore lost confidence but it can
also relieve neck and back pain, fungal or bacterial intertrigo (inflamed skin
folds) and sweating under the breast,’ he says. Depending on the individual,
patients might also find they are covered for the procedure by Medicare or
their health fund.
Dr De Torres has found that his breast reduction patients most commonly
fall into two age groups. Patients aged between 18 and 25 tend to opt
for the procedure in order to rectify disproportionately large breasts after
puberty, while patients aged 40 to 70 typically seek to relieve prolonged
discomfort as a result of overly large breasts.
The surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and usually takes
around two hours. ‘In my experience, patients can typically return to work
around a week after surgery and tend to experience a feeling of tiredness akin
to jetlag that lasts around three weeks,’ says Dr De Torres.
Different skin types can differ in the amount of time it takes to heal, however
I usually find patients are so happy with the results that the issue of scarring
becomes negligible in comparison.’
Patients will experience some degree of weight loss after the surgery. ‘The
average patient loses five kilograms from a breast reduction, which can be
highly motivating for the patient post surgery. I believe the procedure really
can change the appearance of the whole body,’ he concludes. csbm
