Expert speakers included Melbourne laser dermatologist, Dr Philip Bekhor; US medical aesthetician Dr Tahl N Humes; past president of the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Dr Scott Ingram; registered nurse and Cutera trainer Barb Powers; and Director of the Korean Society for Aesthetic and Surgical Dermatology Prof. Kim Wonserk of South Korea. “BACKYARD” INJECTABLES UNDER FIRE Consumers have been warned about the dangers of receiving treatment with cosmetic injectables at the hands of unregistered practitioners in NSW. There are a number of beauty parlours and salons offering cosmetic services without the qualifi cations to do so, say recent reports. Anti-wrinkle injections are restricted under Schedule 4 of the poisons list. This means these injections, alongside dermal fi llers, can only be administered by a medical practitioner or a nurse under the supervision of a doctor. “Unregistered cosmetic surgery places people at greater risk from poor surgical outcomes, severe infections and even nerve damage or disfi gurement,” says NSW acting chief health offi cer Dr Jeremy McAnulty. The same cautioning was reiterated by the NSW president of the Australian Medical Association Dr Saxon Smith. “When it comes to cosmetic surgery performed by an unregistered practitioner, it is not worth risking your face over,” he said. newsfront Dr Longin Zurek in Ho Chi Minh City Last December, Sydney cosmetic surgeon Dr Longin Zurek attended the 11th Annual International Scientifi c Congress of the Ho Chi Minh City Society of Plastic & Aesthetic Surgery.
