brauchen wir denn heute noch revolte?
Der Life Ball dient nicht dazu, geliebt zu werden.
Er sollte polarisieren, und er soll seinen Finger auf
Wunden legen. Wenn man alles bejaht, bekuschelt
und liebt, nimmt man die Schärfe raus. Die Relevanz.
Natürlich ist Provokation, so wie etwa in den extrem
spaß- und lustbetonten 90er Jahren, nicht mehr zeitgemäß.
Der Ball an sich ist immer noch ein Ausdruck
der Lebensfreude, der Lust am Feiern, der Selbstdarstellung.
Das sind seine Wurzeln. Aber natürlich hat
sich seine Ausrichtung über die Jahre verändert. Wir
brauchen heute nicht mehr zu provozieren, wollen
aber sehr wohl zum Reflektieren anregen und immer
am Puls der Zeit bleiben, so es um medizinische Neuerungen
geht. Wenn ich auf die Geschichte des Balls
zurückblicke, ist es erstaunlich, was aus der Idee, etwas
im Kampf gegen hiv/aids zu unternehmen, entstanden
ist. Heute ist der Life Ball nicht nur einer der wichtigsten
Fundraising-Events im Kampf gegen hiv/aids
weltweit, sondern auch eine Networking-Plattform
der wichtigsten internationalen Hilfsorganisationen.
Was man nicht vergessen darf: Der Life Ball ist sich sehr
wohl seiner Rolle im Kampf gegen das soziale aids
bewusst. Ausgrenzung, Ignoranz, Kälte — das alles
tötet ebenso wie das Virus. Egal ob im Pent house oder
im Armenhaus.

spruch: „der zeit ihre kunst, der kunst ihre
freiheit“. ist er noch zeitgemäss?
Als Mahnung? Ja. Leider. Wir leben derzeit in einer
Atmosphäre der Angst, und die Zensur von Kunst ist
wieder Thema. Unsere Gesellschaft ist nicht wirklich
so aufgeklärt und tolerant, wie sie vorgibt zu sein.
Im Gegenteil, wir schlittern beinahe in ein neues
Biedermeier-Zeitalter. Heute nennt man Zensur jedoch
nicht mehr Zensur, man bedient sich eines subtileren
Mittels. Vieles, was gut ist und sich durch die Jahrhunderte,
oft sogar durch die Jahrtausende entwickelt hat,
wird der „Political Correctness“ geopfert. Die Zensur
soll bereits im Kopf des Bürgers stattfinden. Eigenständiges
Denken ist nur erwünscht, wenn es sich mit der
Meinung gewisser Kreise deckt und ihnen nützt. Aber
Kunst ist frei, muss frei sein. Ich halte es für überaus
wichtig, die Kunst, diese Tochter der Freiheit, zu
verteidigen.
also darf sie grenzen überschreiten?
Wie weit sie hätte gehen dürfen, kann ihr ohnehin niemand
vorher sagen, sie muss also zu weit gehen, um
herauszufinden, wie weit sie gehen darf. Deswegen ist sie
ja die einzig erkennbare Erscheinungsform der Freiheit
auf dieser Erde. Der Life Ball zum Beispiel ist bei weitem
nicht so frei, wie viele meinen. Wir müssen Rücksicht
auf so vieles nehmen. Deshalb ist es mir ein so
großes Anliegen, dass die künstlerischen Darbietungen
um den sowie am Ball frei sind. Und bleiben. Gerade in
diesen ängstlichen Zeiten.

do we still need to revolt today?
The Life Ball should polarise the debate and touch a raw
nerve. If everything is about positive affirmation, love
and affection, you take away the poignancy. The relevance.
The provocation of the fun and hedonistic 90s is
no longer relevant. The Ball is still an expression of zest
for life and the pleasures of celebration and self-expression.
But it has shifted its focus over the years. Today we
no longer need to provoke but encourage people to think
and stay up-to-date in terms of medical developments.
It is incredible what has become of the idea of doing
something in the battle against hiv/aids. Today the
Life Ball is one of the most important fundraising events
in the battle against hiv/aids as well as a networking
platform for international charity organisations. What
we should not forget: the Life Ball is very aware of its
role in the battle against ‘social aids’. Exclusion, ignorance,
rejection — this is all just as deadly as the virus
itself. Whether you live in a penthouse or poorhouse.

building reads: ‘to every age its art. to every
art its freedom’. is this still relevant?
As a reminder? Yes, unfortunately. We are living in an
atmosphere of fear and the censorship of art is an issue
again. Our society is not really as enlightened and tolerant
as it pretends to be. On the contrary, we are almost
sliding back to a new Biedermeier age. Censorship is no
longer referred to as censorship, more subtle means are
used. Many good things which have been developed over
the centuries or millennia are falling victim to ‘political
correctness’. Censorship is said to have already occurred
in the mind of citizens. Independent thinking is only
desirable if it reflects the views of certain circles and
benefits them. But art is free, has to be free. I think it is
very important to defend this daughter of freedom.
so should it push boundaries?
Just how far it should have been allowed to go is not
something anyone can say in advance. It should go as far
as it can to find out precisely how far it can go. That’s
why it is the only recognisable manifestation of freedom
on this planet. The Life Ball, for example, is not as free
as many think. We have to take account of so many
things. So it is of huge concern to me that the artistic
performances in and around the Ball are and remain
free. Especially during these anxious times.
