Tradition versus Innovation
Tradition versus Innovation
Under Pallas Athena’s watchful eye, Theseus wrestles with the
Minotaur. Man and beast symbolise the struggle between progress
and tradition — the same struggle that the Vienna Secessionists
fought around the turn of the nineteenth century. The
goddess of the arts seems calm and benign as she observes the
unfolding of events. But her wisdom is reserved for those who
seek to overcome obsolete conventions and strive for renewal.
Life Ball aufgegriffene Plakat.
Wertvorstellungen. Individualismus, Fortschritt,
Akzeptanz und Vielfältigkeit und das kontinuierliche
Überdenken von allem, was „einfach immer schon so
Was hier möglicherweise spitzfindig klingt, macht einen
des Life Ball.
scandal and Gustav Klimt, who created the poster, was
forced to paint an innocent tree over the sexual organs
of Theseus, seen fighting with the Minotaur. The people
of Vienna could not be expected to be put up with such
nakedness.
Over 100 years later, the Life Ball re-interpreted this
subject matter as a homage to the achievements of the
Vienna Secessionists. With a tree again as things have
not progressed much in that respect and nakedness still
causes an outrage.
The goals of the young artists of the day and those of the
Life Ball are not as different as you might think. Both
are battling to overcome age-old social values, albeit
under different circumstances. They are united by
individualism, progress, acceptance, diversity and a
constant rethink of all those things which have ‘simply
always been that way’.
The word acceptance in particular plays an important
role compared to the word tolerance which is much more
commonly used. Tolerance means no more and no less
than ‘I tolerate other ways of thinking and living around
me but have not accepted it’. This might sound like a
subtle difference but in fact it is significant and one of
the central messages of the Life Ball.
