Die Programme zielen aber auch auf entscheidende Einflussfaktoren ab, wie etwa Gender-Disparitäten, Stigmatisierung, Armut, Arbeitslosigkeit, jugendfreundliche Gesundheitsleistungen und auf die Fähigkeit, sichere sexuelle Beziehungen einzugehen. Eine der größten Her ausforderungen bei HIV ist, dass es zum Thema Prävention keine einfache Lösung gibt. Sich vor HIV schützen zu können ist für junge Menschen mit der Fähigkeit verbunden, in die eigene Zukunft, aber auch in die ihres Freundeskreises und ihrer Gemeinschaft zu investieren — und unsere UnterstützerInnen machen dies möglich. Warum haben Sie CtaoP gegründet? Warum investieren Sie Zeit und Energie in den Kampf gegen HIV/AIDS? Wie Sie wissen, komme ich aus Südafrika. Das ist meine Heimat, die habe ich im Blut. Viele Menschen sind immer noch schockiert, wenn ich ihnen erzähle, dass Südafrika derzeit weltweit die höchste Zahl an Menschen beherbergt, die mit HIV leben. Ich habe CtaoP ins Leben gerufen, weil mir die Chance gegeben wurde, etwas zu verändern, und die wollte ich nutzen. HIV kann zu 100 % verhindert werden. Gibt es irgendwelche besonders unvergesslichen Momente, die Sie bei Ihren zahlreichen Reisen nach Subsaharaafrika erlebt haben? Ich spreche oft über die Veränderungen, die ich im Laufe der Jahre erlebt habe. Am Beginn unserer Arbeit war ich in einer Unterrichtsstunde zum Thema Gesundheit, in der die Schülerinnen und Schüler bis auf etwas Gekicher völlig verstummten, als das Thema Sex angesprochen wurde. Als ich ein Jahr später wieder dorthin kam, stellten diese Kinder ganz offen Fragen zum Thema Kondome und Sex. Es mag nur eine kleine Veränderung sein, aber versuchen Sie sich einmal daran zu erinnern, wie viel Mut Sie mit 14 Jahren aufbringen mussten, um die Fragen zu stellen, die Sie wirklich interessiert haben! Sie werden beim First Ladies Luncheon im Schloss Belvedere vor einem ausschließlich weiblichen Publikum eine Keynote Speech halten und dabei über Ihre Organisation und Ihre Vision einer AIDS-freien Generation sprechen. Worin sehen Sie die größten Schwierigkeiten, das Virus aus der Welt zu verbannen, wo sehen Sie Möglichkeiten? Das First Ladies Luncheon ist eine wunderbare Gelegenheit, die überproportionalen und verheerenden Auswirkungen von HIV/AIDS auf Frauen und Mädchen anzusprechen und zu unterstreichen und unsere Bemühungen für eine bessere, gesündere Zukunft für Frauen auf der ganzen Welt zu vereinen. All the programmes we support have education at their heart, because we believe everyone has the right to clear and accu rate health information, but the programmes also address critical drivers like gender disparities, stigma, poverty, unemployment, adolescent-friendly health services, and the ability to negotiate safe sexual relationships. One of the most challenging aspects of HIV is that there isn’t one simple answer for prevention. For young people, the ability to protect themselves from HIV is encompassed in their overall empowerment and ability to invest in their own futures as well as their peers and commu nities — and our grantees are making this happen. What was the reason for founding CtaoP? As you know, I’m from South Africa. It’s my home. It’s in my blood. It still shocks a lot of people when I tell them that South Africa currently has the highest number of people living with HIV in the world. I founded CTAOP because I wanted to use the opportunity I have been given to make a change. HIV is 100 % preventable. Sometimes it seems like we all forget that — and I’m hoping CTAOP can be a vehicle to empower and enable young people, and a voice to remind everyone that this fight isn’t over, but we can end it together. Are there some particularly memorable moments you experienced during your numerous trips to sub-Saharan Africa? When we started out I was in a health class where the students went dead silent with smatterings of giggles when sex was brought up. In the same community, I went back a year later and these kids were openly asking questions about condoms and sex. It may seem small, but you try and remember how much courage it took when you were 14 to ask the questions you really wanted to know about! You will give a keynote speech at the First Ladies Luncheon. Where do you see the greatest difficulties to ban the virus, where are opportunities? The First Ladies Luncheon is an incredible opportunity to highlight and address the disproportionate and devastating impact HIV is having on women and girls, and combine efforts for a better, healthier future for females around the world. By keeping adolescent girls and young women HIV-free and in school, it will not only impact the HIV epidemic but could create a pandemic of healthy, educated women who get married later, have children later — if they decide to have them — gauge the size of the family they can support, and take part in the economic growth of their countries while reducing poverty. They would have a chance at equal opportunity. I truly believe that by empowering young girls to make healthy decisions, we can overcome one of the biggest roadblocks of ending this epidemic.
