Männerkollektionen, die Titel wie „Joli Monsieur“ oder
„And God Created Man“ trugen und keinen Zweifel
daran ließen, dass Gaultier sich mehr an den Punks der
King’s Road und den Londoner Club-Kids orientierte
als an der Pariser Pret-â-porter. Er interpretierte sowohl
die männliche als auch die weibliche Garderobe völlig
neu, indem er Genres, Zeit und Funktionen mischte und
sich über Klischees lustig machte. Männern verpasste er
Tutus, Röcke und Dekolletés mit blank rasierter Brust.
Frauen kleidete er provokant, verrucht emanzipiert und
selbstbewusst in gestreiften Hosenanzügen zu Dessous,
Strapsen und Latex. Weil er nicht nur als Visionär,
sondern auch als handwerkliches Genie galt, arbeiteten
bald die besten jungen Talente der Branche in seinem
Atelier — erst Martin Margiela, dann Nicolas Ghesquière.
Gaultiers Biografie ist schillernd und vielfältig:

Peter Greenaways „Der Koch, der Dieb, seine Frau und
ihr Liebhaber“ oder Luc Bessons „Das fünfte Element“
aus. Sieben Jahre lang kümmerte er sich außerdem als
Artistic Director um die Prêt-à-porter-Kollektion des
Hauses Hermès. Seit dem Tod seines Lebensgefährten
und Geschäftspartners Francis Menuge engagiert sich
Gaultier im Kampf gegen hiv/aids und wurde 2010
mit dem amfar Award of Courage ausgezeichnet.
Vergangenes Jahr zog sich jpg mit einer letzten pompösen
Show im Pariser Kino „Le Grand Rex“ aus dem
Prêt-à-porter-Geschäft zurück, um sich nur noch auf
die Haute Couture und seine Parfums zu konzentrieren.
Ein Kapitel Modegeschichte ging damit zu Ende.
Doch wer weiß schon, womit uns der geniale Franzose
als Nächstes überrascht.
From Sidewalk to Catwalk. Gaultiers aktuelle Ausstellung
läuft bis 3. August 2015 im Pariser Grand Palais.

com pletely new interpretation to both the male and
female wardrobe by blending genres, time and functions
and making fun of clichés. He dressed men in tutus, skirts
and necklines with shaved chests. Women were dressed in
provocative, sinfully emancipated and self-confident
striped trouser suits with lingerie, suspenders and latex.
Since he is classed as a visionary genius as well as a genius
of craftsmanship, some of the best young talents in the
industry were soon working at his studios — first Martin
Margiela and then Nicolas Ghesquière. Gaultier’s biography
is both dazzling and diverse: in addition to his
fashion range and haute-couture collection (introduced in
1997), he has supplied the outfits for films such as Peter
Greenaway’s ‘The Cook, the Thief, his Wife, and her
Lover’ and Luc Besson’s ‘The Fifth Element’. He also
spent seven years working as Artistic Director for the
Hermès prêt-à-porter collection. Since the passing away
of his longtime companion Francis Menuge, Gaultier has
been committed to the fight against hiv/aids and in
2010 was presented with the amfar Award of Courage.
Last year, jpg withdrew from the prêt-à-porter business
with one last pompous show at the Parisian ‘Le Grand
Rex’ cinema and will now concentrate on haute couture
and his perfumes. A chapter in fashion history has drawn
to a close. But who knows what the next surprise of the
ingenious Frenchman will be.
