Life Ball is art 21
The Beethoven Frieze is a centrepiece of Viennese Art Nouveau and a metaphor for the Life Ball.
annimmt.
the Beethoven FriezE
The story it tells is a metaphor for what the Life Ball aims
to achieve. Driven by their desires and wishes, defenseless
people beg the brave Knight to set out and fight for their good
fortune — which is precisely what he does with his companions
of ambition, compassion and pity. He encounters dangers such
as the giant Typhoeus and his Gorgon daughters, he also has
disease, insanity and death to contend with, as well as sweet
enticements in the form of lust, adultery, and intemperance.
Such considerations invite the viewer to embrace life and its
aspects on the path to happiness. All this can turn into agonising
distress, which the allegory of the Life Ball, in the form of a
golden angel, gladly protects. Ulti mately, poetry and art lead
people to the Promised Land with a jubilant choir of angels, a
heartfelt hug and a redemptive kiss. The stressful search is over.
In the interpretation of the Life Ball, this final scene sets out a
clear statement against anxiety and ignorance, the breeding
ground of ‘social aids’.
