Figures 20 and 21present the number of<br />

wells of different types constructed dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

20 th Century <strong>in</strong> Kalyandurg and Dhone<br />

respectively. As <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion on date of<br />

construction of wells was elicited <strong>in</strong> part from<br />

local villagers, <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion for the first part of<br />

the century is presented on a decadal basis. The<br />

peaks <strong>in</strong> well construction dur<strong>in</strong>g the first part<br />

of the century are, therefore, mislead<strong>in</strong>g and the<br />

reality was that the rate of well construction was<br />

more uniform dur<strong>in</strong>g these decades. In contrast,<br />

peaks dur<strong>in</strong>g the last 25 years were related<br />

primarily to government grants and loans that<br />

encouraged sudden spurts <strong>in</strong> well construction.<br />
