7.1 Impacts of watershed<br />

development<br />

Arguably, “traditional” watershed<br />

development has become synonymous<br />

with the construction of check dams<br />

and other water harvest<strong>in</strong>g structures.<br />

Soil and water conservation activities<br />

are seen as an <strong>in</strong>itial step towards<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>able development and as a<br />

cost-effective means of disburs<strong>in</strong>g<br />

substantial amounts of fund<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Box 18 summarises the positive and<br />

less positive aspects of “traditional”<br />

watershed development. The<br />

recommendations that follow <strong>in</strong><br />

Section 8 are aimed at address<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

less positive aspects of current<br />

approaches whilst not negat<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

positive aspects and benefits.<br />
