1. All answera will be recoded from 09 and 10. Any not recoded at the
coding etage will be rejected at the edit etage for recoding.
2. Code the answer written under ‘Specify 09/10’ for that pereon. DO
NOT refer to that pereon‘a netionality, country of birth or parents‘
country of birth, or to the ethnic origin, nationality etc of any related
person in that household unless specifically instructed othemise eg. see
note on Muslfms(petitlli.
3. For mixed origin, it is the ~ of mixture that is important, not
the “quantity”
ie ~ White j West Indian = West Indian/Whfte
1/4 white 3/4 Indian = Indian/White
1/16 white 15/16 West Indian = West Indian/White
4. Where information is given about both parents or ancestors In answer
“South Africarr(Indian ancestors)” = Indian
5. If two or more codes are entered use the following procedures:
i. If code 09 (Mixed Origin) is ringed but there is no written
answer, and one or more of codes 01-08 is also ringed, treat this
as Mixed Origin. Cross through codes 01-08 that are ringed and use
this information to code Mixed Origin as appropriate.
eg Codes 03 (Indian), 07 (African) and 09 ringed, recode to
code 21 (African/Asian mix)
Codes 02 (West Indian) and 09 ringed, recode to code 23
(Miscellaneous “coloured””).
ii. If ~1 is multi-coded with another code treat as ‘mixed‘ and
recode accordingly.
iii. In all other cases where two or mere codes are ringed, accept
the first code ringed and cross through other codes.
eg. codes 04 and 10 ringed, cross through code 10
6. If coded 09 or IO, do not recode answers into codes 01-08
Examine the verbatim and recode into 11-33 accordingly
7. Recoding to “WHI.TE”from 09-10 - if on examining the answer recorded
at 09 Or 10 the ethnic origin falls within the category described as
‘“WHITE’”(see notea on categories at Ethnic Origin) - RECODE TO 11
