For people working short time code the number of hours they usually<br />

work ie when not on short time.<br />

If teachers give an unusually h~gh figure (in excess of the normal<br />

given.<br />

Average hours above 98 hours a week - code as 98 <strong>and</strong> delete any<br />

higher figure - but see note 13 .—<br />

Permanently ‘on call’ - interviewers should have made a note <strong>and</strong><br />

probed for the hours usually worked when cm call (excluding any<br />

overtime ]. Code this—f~gure if it is less than 99 hours, otherwise<br />

use 98 if more than 98 hours.<br />

NB If the info-nt is O“ call sporadically <strong>and</strong> the interviewer<br />

has not been able to establish usual or average hours worked, refer<br />

to s/v.<br />

The DepF o{Cr.@ uses survey data to estimate the total number of<br />

people looking for work. To do this they need to identify<br />

separately those who are claimants ‘, <strong>and</strong> as such recorded as<br />

unemployed in official statistics frmn Unemployment Benefit<br />

Offices , <strong>and</strong> those who are not claimants ‘.<br />

The workers most likely to b= signed on at a UBO are those looking<br />

for work, those available for work but who worked a short week for<br />

some reason last week <strong>and</strong>/or were earning a lcw almunt Workers<br />

may be eligible for UB or Sa as an unemployed person if they earn<br />

less than about 42 on a day. If they earn nmre than this but<br />

insufficient to pay an NI contribution they may siq cm at a UBO to<br />

Clalm an N1 credit.<br />

Include in code 1 if the person $s claim covered last week even<br />

though it may not have been made last wei~ —<br />

Include in code 2 or 3 only those people claiming via an<br />

tinemployment Benefit Office. (They will be required to attend the<br />

USC fortnightly or perhaps quarterly) .<br />

Include in code 4 where the informant is claiming benefits or<br />

credits only through DHSS social security office <strong>and</strong> not via a UBO.<br />
