Using the Standard Industrial Classification, revised 1980,
code the INDUSTRY, using the frame which follows.
1. Do not overcode into the Professional Classes where there is insufficient
evidence that an informant belongs there. Sometimes interviewers record a
person as, a ‘qualified engineer’ but he may in fact be a manual type of
engineer. Check in any case of doubt with education and income and, if
3. Armed Forces Reserve: If income is received for this it should be treated as a
main or subsidiary job, whichever applies. If the income ia merely a retainer
do NOT treat as a job. Check with the Income Section - payment for training
is at equivalent ordinary service rates and should be regarded as payment for
a job.
Retainers are paid out in lump sums - if you are in any doubt refer to S/V.
take the most time consuming. (The income from the second job should appear
at Income Q13) .
If the informant has given his hours and income from both jobs combined axd
the main job cannot be identified, code the job with the highest Social Class
code.
Then the SIC(R) should be coded according to the job chosen to code OCC.
(The total hours worked and income from both jobs will be coded at Q6A/B and
the Income Section).
NB. (i) Working as a domestic help, jobbing gardener etc for several
