definition apply.

1 should be used for students aged less than 50 attending
school or college full-time only. Part-time students
including those attending evening classes or studying
independently eg by correspon&nce courses, Open
University students, etc ,or students aged 50 or over,
should be coded 2, 3 or 4 if one of those codes applies.
Use code 5 as a last resort. Refer any difficulties to
s/v.
Include students absent frcm college because of illness or
on vacation (unless coded 1 at Q.1) and those whose
return to full-tine education depends on examination
results ie assume they will return.
Include unpaid vocational training on courses which
involve attending both college and work eg student
psysiotherapists/ra biographers.
Exclude persons paid a wage or salary by a“ employer
while in full-tire education - these should be treated as
working.
Code—
2 should include those whose inability to work is due to
their own health probleus or disablement. Persons
permanently unable to work due to domestic
responsibilities shculd be coded 4 (keeping hmse). This
code is restricted to those aged 16-64 - Males, 16-54
Females. One of codes 3-5 should be used for those aged
55,170or over.

3 The intention is to include only those who,
had retired from their full-time ocapation
last week,
at
apPrOXIIMtely the retirement age for that occupation, and
were not seeking fnrther employment of any kind. Thus
women who at a comparatively early age cease work in
order to becore housewives or who have never worked are
excluded from tr.~s zategory.
Accept code 3 even when a note explains that the
informant has only worked for a few years eg started work
aged 50, ‘retired’ at 55.
Note that a retired person who last week was ill or in
hospital etc. should still ke coded to the normal status
ie retired.
NB If it appears that an informant has ken coded 3 in error
- Recode to 4 if the person is likely to be keeping
house. Recode to 5 if the person is “ot likely to be
keeping house at all, nor helping to keep house.
