1 should be used for students aged less than 50 attending<br />

school or college full-time only. Part-time students<br />

including those attending evening classes or studying<br />

independently eg by correspon&nce courses, Open<br />

University students, etc ,or students aged 50 or over,<br />

should be coded 2, 3 or 4 if one of those codes applies.<br />

Use code 5 as a last resort. Refer any difficulties to<br />

s/v.<br />

Include students absent frcm college because of illness or<br />

on vacation (unless coded 1 at Q.1) <strong>and</strong> those whose<br />

return to full-tine education depends on examination<br />

results ie assume they will return.<br />

Include unpaid vocational training on courses which<br />

involve attending both college <strong>and</strong> work eg student<br />

psysiotherapists/ra biographers.<br />

Exclude persons paid a wage or salary by a“ employer<br />

while in full-tire education - these should be treated as<br />

working.<br />

Code—<br />

2 should include those whose inability to work is due to<br />

their own health probleus or disablement. Persons<br />

permanently unable to work due to domestic<br />

responsibilities shculd be coded 4 (keeping hmse). This<br />

code is restricted to those aged 16-64 - Males, 16-54<br />

Females. One of codes 3-5 should be used for those aged<br />

55,170or over.<br />

Code—<br />

3 The intention is to include only those who,<br />

had retired from their full-time ocapation<br />

last week,<br />

at<br />

apPrOXIIMtely the retirement age for that occupation, <strong>and</strong><br />

were not seeking fnrther employment of any kind. Thus<br />

women who at a comparatively early age cease work in<br />

order to becore housewives or who have never worked are<br />

excluded from tr.~s zategory.<br />

Accept code 3 even when a note explains that the<br />

informant has only worked for a few years eg started work<br />

aged 50, ‘retired’ at 55.<br />

Note that a retired person who last week was ill or in<br />

hospital etc. should still ke coded to the normal status<br />

ie retired.<br />

NB If it appears that an informant has ken coded 3 in error<br />

- Recode to 4 if the person is likely to be keeping<br />

house. Recode to 5 if the person is “ot likely to be<br />

keeping house at all, nor helping to keep house.<br />
