3.1 Operati<strong>on</strong>s management I – Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

Operati<strong>on</strong>s management is about the day-to-day management of a site to ensure the<br />

efficiency <strong>and</strong> smooth running of the operati<strong>on</strong>s. It is c<strong>on</strong>cerned with the c<strong>on</strong>trol of the<br />

system as well as tourist flow that matches the organisati<strong>on</strong>’s resources to customer<br />

needs. An operati<strong>on</strong>s manager needs to marshal the attracti<strong>on</strong>’s resources including the<br />

manpower, machinery <strong>and</strong> facilities to provide visitors with a satisfactory experience<br />

so that they are willing to come back again.<br />

Scope of operati<strong>on</strong>s management<br />

Operati<strong>on</strong>s management covers a variety of variables from managing queues to<br />

ticketing <strong>and</strong> manpower allocati<strong>on</strong>. From the perspective of the organisati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

operati<strong>on</strong>s management aims at:<br />

♦ Maximising the operati<strong>on</strong>s capacity <strong>and</strong> opportunities for visitor spending in<br />

the park<br />

♦ Ensuring safety <strong>and</strong> security<br />

♦ Minimising operating costs, eg labour <strong>and</strong> energy<br />

♦ Catering for the needs of special visitor groups such as the disabled<br />

♦ Ensuring service quality st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />

♦ Solving major <strong>and</strong> minor problems, if any, as quickly as possible<br />

Within operati<strong>on</strong>s, there are some factors which can be c<strong>on</strong>trolled while others can not.<br />

All these factors are important in ensuring the smooth operati<strong>on</strong> of the park or<br />

attracti<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> thus need attenti<strong>on</strong> from the operati<strong>on</strong>s manager. These factors are listed<br />

in the following table.<br />
