Skills involved<br />
To manage daily operati<strong>on</strong>s successfully, an operati<strong>on</strong>s manager should possess the<br />
following skills:<br />
♦ Comprehensive knowledge across different functi<strong>on</strong>al areas of the site<br />
♦ Thorough underst<strong>and</strong>ing of visitor needs <strong>and</strong> behaviour<br />
♦ The ability to manage the site as a whole while paying attenti<strong>on</strong> to detail<br />
♦ The ability to plan systems <strong>and</strong> procedures in advance, but being flexible in<br />
resp<strong>on</strong>se to changing circumstances<br />
♦ Good communicati<strong>on</strong> skills<br />
♦ The ability to work under pressure <strong>and</strong> in resp<strong>on</strong>se to crises<br />
♦ A good underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the principles of management c<strong>on</strong>trol <strong>and</strong> financial<br />
management<br />
♦ Seeing things from the visitors’ point of view <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong> staff c<strong>on</strong>cerns<br />
Problems <strong>and</strong> problem solving<br />
There are many unforeseen problems in the day-to-day operati<strong>on</strong>s that need special<br />
attenti<strong>on</strong> from the managers. Some of them happen unexpectedly, such as:<br />
♦ Minor v<strong>and</strong>alism<br />
♦ Mechanical breakdowns of rides or computer systems<br />
♦ Bad weather affecting parts of the operati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
♦ Inadequate staff<br />
Other problems may be l<strong>on</strong>g-st<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tinuous, like:<br />
