BCD COG compiled with <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation from <strong>the</strong> U.S. Census Bureau, SC Department ofCommerce <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> BCD COG. The predicted urban growth ma<strong>in</strong>ly takes <strong>the</strong> pattern ofurban sprawl <strong>and</strong> by <strong>the</strong> year 2030 consumes 868 square miles with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> BCD area. If<strong>the</strong> current growth trends cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> predictions hold true, <strong>the</strong> future urban growthwill sprawl considerably outward from <strong>the</strong> current urban boundaries. This has severalsignificant economic, environmental, <strong>and</strong> social implications <strong>in</strong> policy-mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> urbanplann<strong>in</strong>g.Regional Policy ConsiderationsLocal - majority of l<strong>and</strong> use decisions made at this level - municipalities must workcloser with developers to balance growth <strong>and</strong> fiscal responsibilities - work with o<strong>the</strong>rmunicipalities to coord<strong>in</strong>ate growth impacts.County <strong>and</strong> State - policies affect how growth spreads <strong>in</strong>to rural areas - have a certa<strong>in</strong>amount of regulatory authority which must be carefully used to protect environment <strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>fluence developer decisions.Federal - many programs <strong>in</strong>directly <strong>in</strong>fluence development (DOT, NFIP, EPA) - can helpby provid<strong>in</strong>g expertise to state <strong>and</strong> local entities through research/<strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation as well asdirect fund<strong>in</strong>g (community grants, etc.).Plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> management - NOAA scientists utiliz<strong>in</strong>g growth predictions through LU-CES program.
