Hopk<strong>in</strong>s University <strong>in</strong> 1996. At <strong>the</strong> time of his departure <strong>in</strong> 2004 he was <strong>the</strong> AssociateProvost <strong>for</strong> Research <strong>and</strong> Chair of <strong>the</strong> Graduate Board. While at Hopk<strong>in</strong>s he heldacademic appo<strong>in</strong>tments <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department of Biology <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department ofComparative Medic<strong>in</strong>e. Gary has authored over 80 technical papers <strong>and</strong> book chapters,edited 4 books <strong>and</strong> written a field guide. His primary research <strong>in</strong>terest has beenelucidat<strong>in</strong>g mechanisms of chemical carc<strong>in</strong>ogens <strong>for</strong> which he has employed aquatic,rodent <strong>and</strong> human models. She received her BS <strong>in</strong> Biology fromWof<strong>for</strong>d College <strong>in</strong> 1983, Doctor of Veter<strong>in</strong>ary Medic<strong>in</strong>e (1987) <strong>and</strong> Doctor ofPhilosophy <strong>in</strong> Veter<strong>in</strong>ary Pathology (1993) from <strong>the</strong> University of Georgia where shealso completed her residency <strong>in</strong> anatomic veter<strong>in</strong>ary pathology. She is a Diplomat of <strong>the</strong>American College of Veter<strong>in</strong>ary Pathologists (1995) <strong>and</strong> has 13 years experience <strong>in</strong>diagnostic veter<strong>in</strong>ary pathology. Research <strong>in</strong>terests have <strong>in</strong>cluded isolation <strong>and</strong>characterization of tumor growth factors, <strong>and</strong> more recently, viral diseases of shrimp <strong>and</strong>effects of environmental estrogens on development of mammary tumors <strong>in</strong> mice. She is an <strong>in</strong>ternationallyrecognized expert on coral reefs <strong>and</strong> diseases of coral reef organisms, contribut<strong>in</strong>gchapters to books (e.g., Life <strong>and</strong> Death of <strong>Coral</strong> Reefs) <strong>and</strong> journal articles, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g areview (with o<strong>the</strong>rs) on “Ecotoxicology of Tropical Mar<strong>in</strong>e Ecosystems” (Environ.Toxicol. Chem. 16(1):12-40). Her research <strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>the</strong> effects of exposures tobiological, chemical, <strong>and</strong> physical environmental stressors on a variety of <strong>in</strong>vertebrates<strong>and</strong> fishes, comparative histopathology, <strong>and</strong> risk assessment. Her experience wi<strong>the</strong>xam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> distribution of diseased corals <strong>and</strong> histopathological exam<strong>in</strong>ations ofdiseased corals <strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>the</strong> Florida Keys, nor<strong>the</strong>rn <strong>and</strong> western Caribbean, Gulf ofMexico, <strong>and</strong> Hawaii. Es<strong>the</strong>r is also an adjunct scientist, Mote Mar<strong>in</strong>e Laboratory;adjunct professor, where she has been teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> course "<strong>Disease</strong>s of <strong>Coral</strong>s <strong>and</strong> O<strong>the</strong>rReef Organisms" at <strong>the</strong> Tropical Research Laboratory, Summerl<strong>and</strong> Key, Florida, s<strong>in</strong>ce1997. She also holds adjunct positions at Nova Sou<strong>the</strong>astern University, OceanographicCenter, collaborat<strong>in</strong>g with scientists at <strong>the</strong> National <strong>Coral</strong> Reef Institute <strong>the</strong>re; <strong>and</strong> anaffiliate professor, Department of Environmental Science <strong>and</strong> Policy, George MasonUniversity.
