allow immediate resource-based decision mak<strong>in</strong>g to implement timely response activities<strong>and</strong> protective measures, such as temporary closures or activity restrictions <strong>in</strong> criticalareas.The CDHC model response protocol (Woodley et al. 2008) follows a tiered approach <strong>for</strong>respond<strong>in</strong>g which allows <strong>the</strong> level of response to be determ<strong>in</strong>ed based on an assessment<strong>in</strong>terview of <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al observer of <strong>the</strong> disease outbreak (Level I response).If a Level II or Level III response is deemed appropriate, <strong>the</strong> MWG identified <strong>the</strong> need<strong>for</strong> timely report<strong>in</strong>g of f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs to managers to allow implementation of possiblemanagement actions <strong>in</strong> a timely manner. This <strong>in</strong>cludes a recognized need <strong>for</strong> follow-upsurveys to determ<strong>in</strong>e impacts on affected corals, fisheries resources <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> ecosystem <strong>in</strong>general. The MWG identified <strong>the</strong> importance of adopt<strong>in</strong>g st<strong>and</strong>ardized monitor<strong>in</strong>gprotocols <strong>and</strong> ensur<strong>in</strong>g sufficient human <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial capacity to support post-<strong>in</strong>cidentmonitor<strong>in</strong>g be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> disease event occurs.
