Coral Model Species Supplementary InformationThe CoralZoo Project (for further information see the following web site: http://www.istworld.org/ProjectDetails.aspx?ProjectId=cd19d34b169247f4a3e907f1a178b772)claimsto be the first comprehensive approach that makes use of molecular biology,mathematical, toxicological and nutritional tools for the development of unique breedingprotocol for corals in captivity. The goal is to enable the SMEs to establish large stocksof coral colonies (the asexual approach) that represent a high genetic variability (thesexual approach) and exhibit natural growth forms.In order to achieve the main deliverables, research will focus on the following topics:(1) sexual and asexual breeding of corals in captivity, including breeding and feedingtechniques and induction of natural coral colony morphogenesis(2) coral husbandry: development of generic bioassays to evaluate biotic and abiotichusbandry parameters and to monitor coral health, elaboration of methods foridentification and treatment of coral diseases and optimization of transport andacclimation procedures.The consortium members bring complementary expertise to the project. Researchers atWageningen University have experience in water recirculation systems and the culturingof marine organisms. Microbiologists specializing in coral diseases are based at theItalian Consortium for Marine Sciences, while coral biologists at the Israel Oceanographyand Limnology Research Institute are primarily investigating nutritional aspects. Finally,a group at the Technical University of Dresden is modeling the data obtained from theother research partners, to predict how corals will perform under particular aquariumconditions. The academic competences are complemented by the applied aquarist’sresearch skills of the SME partners.290
Appendix IV. Biographical Sketches of Workshop ParticipantsGreta AebyGreta is a coral biologist at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB). Sheobtained her Ph.D. at the University of Hawaii where she studied the evolution andecology of the coral disease, Porites trematodiasis. She then completed post-doctoraltraining at the University of West Florida examining factors affecting the susceptibility ofcoral to black band disease. She returned to Hawaii and has been investigating coral andfish disease in the main and northwestern Hawaiian Islands as well as in other areas ofthe Indo-Pacific.Email: greta@hawaii.eduJeff AllenJeff received his BS degree in Wildlife Biology from Michigan State University and hisMS degree in Geography from the University of South Carolina. He received a Ph.D. inPolicy Studies from Clemson University with an emphasis in natural resources policy.Prior to coming to the Thurmond Institute, he worked for the S.C. Wildlife and MarineResources Department as a cartographic database manager; Clemson University and theNational Park Service as an outdoor recreation planner for military installations acrossthe U.S.; and the Regional Resources Development Institute at Clemson University as itsprogram administrator. Currently, Jeff is the Director of the South Carolina WaterResources Center as well as Research Coordinator at the Strom Thurmond Institute ofGovernment and Public Affairs (STI) at Clemson University. He oversees all projectswithin the Water Center (SCWRC), Regional Development Group (RDG), and Decisionand Communication Technologies Group (DCTG). His work with the SCWRC involvesadministering grant money from USGS, coordinating water research with a nationalnetwork of water research institutes and identifying and pursuing critical water researchneeds for South Carolina. His duties associated with other research groups includefacilitating graduate student and faculty research, supervising STI's involvement withregional development issues, and initiating new endeavors that blend the needs andexpertise of STI and various academic departments. Jeff has been actively involved incommunity development projects as well as natural resource policy and coastal researchissues. Recent projects have included developing spatial models for predicting urbangrowth patterns as well as collaborating with a private company (SpectroTech) to bringhyperspectral remote sensing technology to Clemson University. Additionally, Jeff’swork includes project design and administration of research within the Institute’s SpatialAnalysis Laboratory. This facility houses computers used for geographic informationsystems research and remote sensing image analysis.
