Appendix IV. Biographical Sketches of Workshop ParticipantsGreta AebyGreta is a coral biologist at <strong>the</strong> Hawaii Institute of Mar<strong>in</strong>e Biology (HIMB). Sheobta<strong>in</strong>ed her Ph.D. at <strong>the</strong> University of Hawaii where she studied <strong>the</strong> evolution <strong>and</strong>ecology of <strong>the</strong> coral disease, Porites trematodiasis. She <strong>the</strong>n completed post-doctoraltra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> University of West Florida exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g factors affect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> susceptibility ofcoral to black b<strong>and</strong> disease. She returned to Hawaii <strong>and</strong> has been <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g coral <strong>and</strong>fish disease <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> northwestern Hawaiian Isl<strong>and</strong>s as well as <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r areas of<strong>the</strong> Indo-<strong>Pacific</strong>.Email: greta@hawaii.eduJeff AllenJeff received his BS degree <strong>in</strong> Wildlife Biology from Michigan State University <strong>and</strong> hisMS degree <strong>in</strong> Geography from <strong>the</strong> University of South Carol<strong>in</strong>a. He received a Ph.D. <strong>in</strong>Policy Studies from Clemson University with an emphasis <strong>in</strong> natural resources policy.Prior to com<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Thurmond Institute, he worked <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> S.C. Wildlife <strong>and</strong> Mar<strong>in</strong>eResources Department as a cartographic database manager; Clemson University <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>National Park Service as an outdoor recreation planner <strong>for</strong> military <strong>in</strong>stallations across<strong>the</strong> U.S.; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Regional Resources Development Institute at Clemson University as itsprogram adm<strong>in</strong>istrator. Currently, Jeff is <strong>the</strong> Director of <strong>the</strong> South Carol<strong>in</strong>a WaterResources Center as well as Research Coord<strong>in</strong>ator at <strong>the</strong> Strom Thurmond Institute ofGovernment <strong>and</strong> Public Affairs (STI) at Clemson University. He oversees all projectswith<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Water Center (SCWRC), Regional Development Group (RDG), <strong>and</strong> Decision<strong>and</strong> Communication Technologies Group (DCTG). His work with <strong>the</strong> SCWRC <strong>in</strong>volvesadm<strong>in</strong>ister<strong>in</strong>g grant money from USGS, coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g water research with a nationalnetwork of water research <strong>in</strong>stitutes <strong>and</strong> identify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> pursu<strong>in</strong>g critical water researchneeds <strong>for</strong> South Carol<strong>in</strong>a. His duties associated with o<strong>the</strong>r research groups <strong>in</strong>cludefacilitat<strong>in</strong>g graduate student <strong>and</strong> faculty research, supervis<strong>in</strong>g STI's <strong>in</strong>volvement withregional development issues, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiat<strong>in</strong>g new endeavors that blend <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>and</strong>expertise of STI <strong>and</strong> various academic departments. Jeff has been actively <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong>community development projects as well as natural resource policy <strong>and</strong> coastal researchissues. Recent projects have <strong>in</strong>cluded develop<strong>in</strong>g spatial models <strong>for</strong> predict<strong>in</strong>g urbangrowth patterns as well as collaborat<strong>in</strong>g with a private company (SpectroTech) to br<strong>in</strong>ghyperspectral remote sens<strong>in</strong>g technology to Clemson University. Additionally, Jeff’swork <strong>in</strong>cludes project design <strong>and</strong> adm<strong>in</strong>istration of research with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute’s SpatialAnalysis Laboratory. This facility houses computers used <strong>for</strong> geographic <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mationsystems research <strong>and</strong> remote sens<strong>in</strong>g image analysis. Projects with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> facility focus onprovid<strong>in</strong>g better spatial <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation to decision-makers <strong>and</strong> stake-holders regard<strong>in</strong>gSouth Carol<strong>in</strong>a <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>ast.Email: jeff@strom.clemson.edu291
