To Cambodia Date December 14 (Tue.) – 18 (Sat.), 2010 4 working days Venue Koh Pich Exhibition Center (Phnom Penh) Name of Exhibition The 5 th Cambodia Import-Export & One Province One Product Exhibition Co-organizer Ministry of Commerce, Cambodia Participants 8 persons from 7 companies Evaluation Direct invitation to Japanese buyers through email and direct mail would be one of the most effective ways to attract many buyers to the program instead of PR through media such as newspaper. Such specific product oriented trade fair would be beneficial for the Japanese buyers rather than a general trade fair in terms of business meetings. 4. Information Dissemination (1) Seminar in ASEAN a) Outline The “Seminar in ASEAN” activity was implemented in Myanmar to create an awareness on the importance of gathering information on Gifts, Houseware & Decoration products for the Japanese market. Lacquerware and Fashion Jewelry were proposed by Myanmar as the first priority products to be promoted and developed toward the Japan market. b) Activities The Centre implemented two (2) workshops with seminar and consultation 26
sessions on the following dates; i) First Workshop on August 5-7, 2010 in Mandalay - To give information on related topics (1 day seminar) - To give assignments to each participant to develop their product (2-day group consultation sessions) ii) Second Workshop on December 19-25, 2010 in Bagan and Mandalay Following the first workshop, the second one was conducted to select 10 companies for participation in the Myanmar Trade Missions with Business Meetings to be held in 2011 in Tokyo. c) Evaluation i) First Workshop on August 5-7, 2010 in Mandalay On the first day of the program, seminars were conducted by Ms. Kahoru Araki, Owner of Nandawun Japan and Mr. Junya Kitagawara, President of Art Resources Inc. There were 57 participants from the private sectors such as lacquerware, fine jewelry, fashion jewelry, rattan products and silk & cotton textiles and 31 guests from Myanmar Ministry of Commerce, Mandalay Chamber of Commerce and Industry, handicrafts institutes, jewelry association and the media. The following two days were devoted to product development consultation in four (4) sessions conducted by Mr. Kitagawara; 1) Lacquerware products, 2) Fashion Jewelry, 3) Rattan & weaving items, and 4) Textile – home & fashion. New product development was assigned to each group. Mr. Kitagawara summarized the result of the seminar and consultations. The purpose of his visit was to disseminate the information on Japanese lifestyle and market trend at the seminar and to give advice/assignments to the participants at the workshop to develop their product. He expected more lacquer ware and rattan companies to join the workshop. He further suggested finding more lacquer ware companies from Bagan for the second workshop. ii) Second Workshop on December 20-24, 2010 in Bagan and Mandalay Bagan: December 20-21 Appointments and visits to 6 lacquerware workshops in Bagan were made. Four workshops were selected. Although lacquerware has been widely used in Myanmar as food containers, it has not been approved for use as food containers in Japan. Therefore, it was recommended that the lacquerware item be promoted as home decorative items or others, but not for use as food containers. Mandalay: December 22-23 There were three (3) main discussion sessions in Mandalay on December 23; 1) Fashion Jewelry, 2) Textile – home & fashion, and 3) sequins tapestries. Since the Mandalay Gems Association had completed the assignments given at the first workshop held in August, Mr. Kitagawara recommended them to join the Trade 27
